Twilight

Hey! Now I’m going to write about each of one of the 4 books in the Twilight Saga starting with the first one. I enjoy reading all of the books because I think they are very exciting. The first book in the saga is Twilight by Stephenie Meyer. It was made into a movie on November 21, 2008.

Twilight is about a 17 year old girl named Isabella Swan that lives in Phoenix, Arizona with her mom and her mom’s fiancĂ©, Phil. He is a minor league baseball player so he travels a lot. Bella’s mom stays home with her even though Bella knows she would like to travel with Phil. Bella decides to live with her dad, Charlie Swan, in Forks, Washington; a small and gloomy town. Forks, Washington is a real place and is now a hotspot for Twilight fans. Bella spots the Cullens in the cafeteria at school and is immediately intrigued. Edward is stunningly attractive but he’s also an outsider. They become friends and she falls in love with him but she still can’t figure out why he’s so different. After going to the beach with her friends she hears some stories about “the cold ones”. “The cold ones” are vampires who have sworn off humans; which means they don’t drink human blood, they survive on the blood of animals. Although, they still are not welcome on Indian lands. She’s curious about “the cold ones” so she researches about them on her computer and realizes that Edward and his family are all vampires.

He is also in love with Bella which he considers a delight and a torment. Although he doesn’t drink human blood, he still craves it and her scent makes him want it even more. After a baseball game with the Cullens, three other vampires find them and one of them, James, wants to kill Bella which leads the Cullens to do everything they can to protect her. I enjoyed reading the book so I decided to watch the movie. In most cases, I think the books are better and that is definitely true with this one.  The director did not have much money to make the movie with so it wasn’t as good as I had hoped.  They left a few parts from the book out that I thought was important and so it wasn’t done as well as it should have been. I still think everyone should go watch the movie though. It is important to read the first book if you are planning on reading the rest of the books. If no one reads the first one, the other books will be very confusing, therefore I suggest everyone read Twilight first.

Beautiful Lies

The book this week is called Beautiful Lies by Lisa Unger.  It is about a woman named Ridley Jones in her early 30’s. She is a journalist in New York and lives a privileged live; her father is a pediatrician and her mother is a busy stay-at-home mom. The only flaw to her family was her older druggie brother.  If she had slept in for just 10 minutes longer, her life would still be perfect. But she saves a little boy from getting hit by a car that changes everything.  A photographer filmed the whole event turning Ridley Jones into a media celebrity; her face was even on CNN.  Once everything dies down, she receives a package on her doorstep with a picture of a woman that looks like her holding a small baby and a note that says “Are you my daughter?” Curious, she asks her parents about it and they act like she’s foolish.  She then meets Jake, the metal sculptor that just moved in upstairs, she tells him about the note and picture because she feels like she can trust him. But can she?

The next day, she finds another note. This time it says “They Lied.” Now she’s even more curious and can’t let all of this go.  Her parents and her ex boyfriend Zack tell her to drop it but she knows she just can’t.  After she witnesses a murder she has no choice but to follow everything that is happening and find out what is going on. The whole book leads her to new discoveries about her life and the people in her life. The small things Ridley ignored in the past now have an entirely different meaning. I’m sure the ending will surprise everyone. It did me.

Here is a small excerpt of the first chapter from Barnes & Noble:
"Ridley, please, don't do this." The voice echoes in the dark and comes from up above me. "We can work this out."
I don't answer. I know it's a trick. Nothing about this can be worked out now; we're all too far gone. There have been plenty of chances to close my eyes and go back to the sleep of my life as it was, but I haven't taken any of them. Do I wish now that I had? It's hard to answer that question, as the wraiths move closer.
"Six," he whispers.
"What?"
"You have six bullets left."
This book is a romantic thriller that will keep anyone on his or her toes.  It is described as a “nail-biter” and that’s definitely true.  The cons are :
  • that it is predictable
  • explicit
The pros are :
  • that it will keep you interested
  • it is exciting to read.
You can buy the book here.

Dear John

My name is Vicky. I love reading books so I want to share the books I’ve read with you. The first book that I would suggest you read is Dear John by Nicholas Sparks. Buy the book here.

It is a romantic drama about an army sergeant that falls in love with a woman in two weeks. I enjoy this book because it is during the same time of 9/11. It shows a little of what it was like when 9/11 was happening. I was only about 7 when 9/11 happened and I was in school so I didn’t even know what really occured and it didn’t matter much to me until I was about 13. I now know why it was such a big deal to the United States and why it still matters to us now. This is a great book for people who like romantic stories.

Dear John starts off with a high school dropout named John Tyree that enlists in the army. One summer day he meets Savannah Curtis, the love of his life. He then narrates the story of how they fell in love. He starts at the beginning when they first met in North Carolina with his father during the summer. Savannah’s purse gets knocked into the ocean by her friend and he dives into the water to retrieve it for her. They immediately become friends that night and for the last two weeks of summer they are inseparable. At the end of the two weeks they realize that they have fallen in love and that they have one year apart while he is serving in the war. Unpredictably, 9/11 happens. John decides to re-enlist to serve his country which means another two years away from Savannah.  They still write letters to each other but one letter changes everything. The last letter she writes ends their relationship forever because she falls in love with someone else and is already engaged before he gets back home.  Instead of going back home, he stays in the army and gets shot in the shoulder so he takes some time away from the war. Later, he finds out that his dad is very sick so he is sent home again. After his dad passes away he visits Savannah. Although she is now married, he is still in love with her and they stay friends after her husband passes away. Visit the official site. This is where I found a lot of my information.
